Chapter Seven: Owned

Anna paced the front room of the prospective shop location. Who was she kidding? This was the new shop location. Yuri, an overseer one level higher than enforcers Pyotr and Vanya, had vetoed everything else. At least this place was clean, had decent foot traffic, and a relatively nice apartment overhead. Hopefully, she wouldn’t have to share it with Konstantin, who’d just dumped her like rancid bread. So she focused entirely on the shop, and made a mental list of all the changes she’d make. Framed samples on the wall, a reception desk here, that room for piercing, this one for me, the other for Konstantin, red and black walls instead of blue…

Across the shop, the men talked turkey. Did Americans still say that? They discussed rent, percentage sharing, whatever. Anna hadn’t expected to have a say in that. If she got a cut at all, it would be out of the nascent kindness of Konstantin’s heart. She didn’t mind. Good customers knew how things were, and tipped her in cash. She had a sizeable stash hidden away.

Eventually, Konstantin and Yuri shook hands. Pyotr and Vanya, who’d control the property day-to-day – maintenance, protection, rent collection – looked on, and listened to the deal being made. When the men finished dealing, they came over to Anna in the front of the shop, and more general conversation followed.

Anna toned everything out until Yuri spoke directly to her. He was fat, extremely fat, and bald. But not the good kind of bald like Konstantin, who’d been dignified enough to shave what remained a decade ago and have done. Yuri had a goatee, straggly side hair, beady eyes, and at least 200 extra pounds on his frame. Plus, he leered at her like a goat in heat. Repulsive.

“What about you?” Yuri asked Anna. She thought he was speaking rhetorically, the way he stroked his goatee. But no, he pressed on. “You’re Pyotr’s sister, yes? You could make good money in a club or brothel. I’d let you audition for me personally,” he finished with a leer.

Anna grimaced, and nearly forgave Konstantin for dumping her when he spoke for her. “She’s my apprentice,” he explained calmly, weighing the pros and cons of giving his ex to Vanya over Yuri. “She makes two or three times what a whore does, doing tattoos.”

“Well I’ll be booking an appointment with you then,” Yuri lisped, leaning in close to try and stare down Anna’s cardigan. “A private appointment, if you know what I mean.” And then Anna’s three very repulsed male relatives were forced to laugh along with him, as that’s what one does when his boss laughs. Anna pretended to laugh too, then turned around as if to examine the front window, and silently screamed. She pulled herself together just in time for Yuri’s departure and final leer.

“If I have to touch him, I will bite him,” Anna said through clenched teeth, as she, Konstantin, Pyotr, and Vanya watched Yuir depart in a sleek, black limo.
